Sustainable DSKD project in collaboration between the Faroese knitwear company Gudrun & Gudrun, L.E.O. and Fashion and Textile designer Silke Foged. Together we decided to make a small accessory collection consisting of a pair of sneakers, a pair of sandals, a tote bag and small purse. The aesthetics of the collection came from a trip to the Faroe Islands, Location of Gudrun & Gudrun HQ, where we got inspired by the culture and nature of the country and got a close up look at Gudrun & Gudrun’s headquarters.
We wanted to work with sustainability especially zero waste and local production.
The fishing industry in the Faroe Islands makes up over 90% of the Faroese exports, which made it a natural place to improve sustainability.
From the Faroese fishing industry we salvaged the materials for the project: Used fishing nets that are normally burned after use and discarded fish skins which would have been thrown out but instead, made in to sustainable leather.
We managed to design accessories that are both functional and aesthetic for an every day life, on streets as well as in the nature of the Faroe Islands, while generating zero waste and only leaving green footsteps on our planet.
We used recycled fishnet for knitting and natural rubber for the soles which enabled us to avoid using toxic resins. Both shoes are modular by concept, which means they’re easy to disassemble and therefore easier to recycle.
In the bags the only application we did was to put in a Natulon™ zipper from YKK which is made from recycled polyester sewn on by recycled polyester thread. We used heat to melt the material onto itself to avoid using any extra materials and to keep the number of stitchings to a minimum.
The final collection shows how waste and bi-products can reused in to beautiful products and therefore at least double the lifespan.
Collaborating with Gudrun & Gudrun has been an amazing experience. Working towards the same goals and objectives, even for a short while showed us the strengths and possibilities that the Faroe Islands have to offer.
